Tip amount equals bill × (tip percent ÷ 100). Total due equals bill + tip. For a shared check, divide tip and total by the number of people for an equal split.

tip = price × percent / 100
total = price + tip
Shared bill
tip ÷ people · total ÷ people
Example: $55 at 15% with 4 people → $8.25 tip, $63.25 total, $2.06 tip each, $15.81 each overall.
What tipping means around the world
A tip (or gratuity) is an extra payment thanking someone for service. Whether it is expected — and how large it should be — depends heavily on local labor norms and etiquette. In the United States, tips are often built into how servers reach a living wage. In other places, wages already include service, so a tip may be unnecessary or even awkward.
Travel tip: look up customs before dining out abroad. Leaving money on the table can be seen as generous in one country and inappropriate in another. When a venue already adds a service charge, confirm what that covers before adding more.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
In the United States, tipping is usually calculated on the meal price before sales tax. Some diners tip on the full total for convenience — either approach is fine if you stay in a fair percentage range for the service you received.
